Diamond Harbour

A very special place on the South side of Lyttelton Harbour. This historic little town is nestled between pretty Church bay and popular Purau Bay. All seem a little remote thanks to access issues, the drive around the harbour taking a bit under an hour from Lyttelton Tunnel/Governors Bay, or cross in a little ferryboat from Lyttelton.
The charm of the place is not diminished at all by it's quietness, Diamond Harbour being a very sedate alternative to bustling Akaroa on the other side of the peninsula. The bays face north, meaning they bask in excellent sun, a bit of wind and views across to Lyttleton.
Diamond Harbour was, and is still the home of early Canterbury settlers the Stoddarts, some of whom became Stoddards. Artist Margaret Stoddart painted a famous image of the original family homestead, which has now been restored for posterity. Ms Stoddart lived in nearby Godley House, a grand home of Heritage status which was lost in the Canterbury Earthquakes. Her painting is celebrated in a video audio tour from the Christchurch Art Gallery.
Godley House had served as the town's lunching spot, but following it's demise a new cafe also named Godley sprung up and has been well received, especially for it's Gluten Free fare.
For a picnic, Stoddart Point recreation reserve is perfect, or stroll as near or far as you please in the direction of Purau or Church Bay.
Diamond Harbour is the start of one route to the ancient crater of Mt Herbert, one of two volcanos that formed Banks Peninsula. It is a DoC walk of about 6 hours. See the Diamond Harbour website get the flavour of this little community.
