Unless you have been trapped in a snowstorm in the Southern Alps, the minus 18°C temperatures of the storm simulation room at the Antarctic Centre is probably the coldest temperature you are likely to experience in New Zealand. (They do provide ECW, Extreme Cold Weather clothing, so you don’t experience full thermal shock, just a bit of taste of an Antarctic storm). This is the most exhilarating of their interactive real-life experiences, but some of the others are almost as fun, if you like dogs (live huskies!), birds (cute penguins!) or grunty machines (all-terrain vehicles!).
For those with a longer attention span, the displays delve further into the unique Antarctic environment – with science-based exhibits that make the most of replicas and three-dimensional objects. These offer insights into life on Scott Base, both contemporary and historical, the peculiarities of that harsh climate, and the region’s wildlife. Smaller visitors may find the shop pretty enticing as well – be warned!
