Addington-Somerfield, Christchurch City
A journey of contrasts: the Tranzalpine traverses the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps to reach Greymouth in four and one half hours. You can come back the same day or stay and visit West Coast attractions such as Punakaiki and the glaciers. Another option is to take the train as far as Arthur's Pass, spend about 5 hours there, and catch it back to Christchurch on its return trip.
