1 Harvey Street, Matakanui-Omakau, Central Otago
Historic town, also a stop on the Otago Central Rail Trail.
It took more than 300 workers three years to build the two tunnels and two bridges necessary to get the railway through the rugged terrain.
Has a pretty brick Catholic Church (1928) and some other nice leftover buildings from it's gold, farming and railway heyday, including the Bank of New Zealand, Post Office, and a 'stacked stone' Commercial Hotel. Black's Cemetery records the toll the 1918 Influenza Pandemic left on the district.
