Waimahia Inlet is a 16-hectare affordable housing development designed with a community focus. It is now fully tenanted.
The development provides 295 architecturally designed affordable homes in a coastal setting with provision for parks and waterfront reserves. 127 units were sold on the open market and up to 99 tenanted on shared equity or rent-to-buy arrangements. The rest are low rent tenancies, administered by several independent charities rather than Housing NZ. Auckland iwi (the Tamaki Collective of 13 Auckland tribes) have formed a partnership with voluntary agencies for this low-cost housing development. The project is backed by a $29 million Government grant but this is not a State development.
Qualifying criteria for those people seeking 'affordable' housing included having a deposit, being a first time buyer, having a household income in a certain range, living or working locally and having least one member of the household in full time employment.
The project was completed in December 2018.
