From Western Springs, you can walk right out into Auckland Harbour on the city's longest lava tube.
Meola Reef is a thin finger of land butting into the harbour between Western Springs and Point Chevalier, the larger part of which is a dog park. If you venture further out, take extreme care because razor sharp Oyster that populate the Reef.
The volcano that created the longest lava tube in Auckland harbour, was Mt St John, which blew a relatively recent 75,000 years ago, on the other side of town. It tracks back beneath the newer (28,000 year old) Mt Eden volcano. Geotrips explains more.
