Station Backpackers - Station Hotel Auckland

Here is the complementary hotel to the Auckland Railway Station, kitted out in the same red and yellow bricks, with the same straight up and down lines and no nonsense 1930s function that the railway station is famous for.

The hotel was a project of New Zealand's first Maori architect, Mr William Swanson Read Bloomfield, of Ngati Kahungungu, who studied at the University of Pennsylvania University. Bloomfield was in his heyday when he built this, designing several bigger buildings at the same time. Later he served in the Airforce as a squadron leader during WWII, and the Railway Hotel became a popular place to stay.

Though Railway Station has changed it's purpose and the hotel has been through several refurbishments, a 'segmental arched ceiling with timbering, and deeply moulded Art Deco plaster capitals with unmistakable Maori cultural references' remains and it is standing firm on Beach road and offering good accommodation.
