A Vintage Railway Station reinvigorated by population expansion.
Papakura, formerly the southern backblock on the commuter rail trail, is now the third busiest station on the Auckland Rail Network, thanks to intensive residential development in rural Franklin and semi-permanent gridlock on the Southern Motorway.
Recent upgrades at the station included expansions to the park-and-ride carparks, work on canopies, furniture, lighting, CCTV and signs. The 1922 George Troup station was given a new lease on life, by Opus. It was refurbished, has a new verandah and now houses a ticket office, information displays, new public toilets and room for a café kiosk. Inside the building, the old signal panel has been preserved and the 80-year-old manual signaling system replaced with a modern automated signaling system.
Papakura has always been a stop for the Northern Explorer and remains so.
