Mangere Mountain

Volcanoes are a conspicuous feature of the Auckland city landscape. Within a radius of about 20km centred on Auckland city there are 49 discrete volcanoes. Maoris used them as living places and fortification (pa) sites and their soil for growing vegetables for early Auckland. They have been quarried.

More recently they have developed recreational uses and volcanic features have been protected. At Mangere Mountain you can circumnavigate the rim on a walking track taking in two trig stations. Mangere mountain was one of the earliest filming locations used by Hercules and Xena the Warrior Princess.
