Britomart Transport Centre and the Former Chief Post Office

The glory of the newly built Britomart train station is in contrast to the smallness and quality of the suburban train system for which it is a terminus but earnest efforts are being made to effect improvements. In 2015 rail patronage grew strongly and a decision was made to proceed with the CRL (City Rail Link) extending Auckland's passenger rail system underground past Britomart to connect to the existing regional rail network at Mt Eden. The new proposed light rail will strengthen regional transport, provide accessibility into and out of the city centre Britomart will become a through station with new stations near Aotea Square and Karangahape Road, and a redeveloped station at Mount Eden. An interesting commentary on transport and urban issues in Auckland can be found here.

The Queen Street entrance to to the Britomart Centre is through the former Chief Post Office. It was designed by the government architect John Campbell. On 20 November 1912 the building was opened by the Prime Minister William Massey watched by a crowd of more than eight thousand.
