Symonds Street, Grafton-Newmarket, Auckland
This memorial to lost lives in the Land Wars has what is today a politically incorrect inscription honouring only Pakeha and Maori who fought on the side of the British.
It was unveiled in 1920 long after the wars were over. The existence of the memorial and the form it takes provides an interesting perspective on the views of Pakeha New Zealanders at the time. The designer was British sculptor, T. Eyre Macklin For further insights see the Historic Places entry.
