31 Princes Street, Auckland, Auckland

Sir George Grey Statue

Grey was an important British colonial diplomat and politician, having been twice governor of New Zealand (1845-1853 & 1861-1868), the last superintendent of Auckland (1875-1876), and the premier of New Zealand (1877-1879).

This statue was made in England by a sculptor whom had never met Grey and who was working from one photograph, this possibly could have become the reason that the statue has been described as lacking in life. Nevertheless it is a Category One Historic Place, the significance resting with Grey's work rather than this work.
