The newest volcano in Auckland, Rangitoto emerged approximately 700 years ago. The island is accessible by ferry, and offers walks through the worlds largest pohutukawa forest.There are superb views from the summit, where a boardwalk and seating make for an interesting, if windswept, picnic site. Transport is available to the summit for those who do not wish to make the 1.5 hour return journey. Rangitoto is joined to Motutapu Island by a causeway. An entire ecological district in one area. DOC owned.. Dog exercise: Dogs are prohibited from Rangitoto Island Scenic Reserve and Crown Foreshore.
