Academy Cinema

Academy Cinema is one of Auckland’s most thriving film venues. Opened in 1982, Academy is located in the heart of the city, underneath the Auckland City Library. The theatre has a diverse programme, ranging from blockbusters, new arthouse and foreign films to retro revivals and often has special cult film screenings, marathons and themed series.

Academy Cinema hosts the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Film Society and is a venue for the New Zealand International Film Festival. The theatre is particularly renowned for their $5 Wednesdays, where you can catch a returning or off-beat film for a fiver.

Note: The theatre underground is down several flights of stairs. For those with access needs, we reccommend contacting the theatre in advance.
