65 Kelburn Parade, Kelburn, Wellington City
Winding sinuously along Kelburn Parade, the Biological Sciences Building is an impressive addition to the streetscape. Its name Te Toki a Rata comes from the legend of Rata, a story with a strong connection to Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural and natural heritage that tells of the need to adopt appropriate methods in order to succeed in one’s task.
Warren and Mahoney were the architects.
Across the road at 30 Kelburn Parade, now the Murphy Building, is a plaque commemorating that Nobel Prize winner Maurice Wilkins lived here as a boy. The Biological Sciences building is home to affiliate researchers in the Maurice Wilkins Centre's network.
