Greys Avenue Flats

The Greys Avenue flats are public housing designed by the Ministry of Works in the 'International Style' built to replace a purported slum. The first four (lower) blocks containing 50 units were built immediately after war the (1945-47); the project having been delayed from its initiation in 1941. Subsequently, 86 units were incorporated in a taller slimmer lighter block uphill.

Long Live the Modern: New Zealand's New Architecture, 1904-1984

In 2018 Housing New Zealand announced that the Greys Avenue block had reached the end of its useful life and would be demolished to be replaced by a new block with around 200 apartments.
