This is a Lord of the Rings Film site, deep in Fiordland National Park but surprisingly accessible on the side of the highway.

What happened here was Frodo falling under the spell of the dead floating in the swamp, Gollum coming to the rescue, guiding Frodo and Sam through the swamp.
