Ngapara Mill

The Ngapara flour mill was built of local limestone in 1898. It used locally mined coal. In the early 20thC the district was a major region for wheat farming. For over 80 years from 1877 Ngapara was the terminus of a branch line railway that left the Main South Line near Oamaru. At its peak, Ngapara station had a small locomotive depot, complete with turntable. The line was built to export agricultural produce and limestone and was used by the flour mill. Passenger services stopped in 1926.

By 2016 milling had stopped as it was not *economic any more,*but the manager, Mr Paton said The old Ngapara flour mill was being kept intact. Should it ever be needed again, “it can be restarted any time.”

Ngapara Mill features as an attraction on the 'Vanished World' trail.
