Rappahannock River

How and why the name of a North American Tribe came to be used as the name for a river deep in the South Island's Lewis Pass is a mystery to NZPlaces. The American influence continues with the road being named the 'Shenandoah' highway, despite almost no resemblance to Virginia where these very American terms originated.

The Rappahannock people have lost much of their population and all of their lands in Virginia, with one notable success attributed to their tribe, when a case called 'Loving v Virginia' successfully overturned the laws against interracial marriage.
In 1967.

NZPlaces friends, if you are visiting this area and happen to discover the connection with Virginia, please let us know, take a photo...
