Port Loop Road, Timaru Port, Timaru
Caroline Bay has a safe bathing beach, a large children's playground, including a pirate ship, and free tennis courts. Once the sea bordered on cliffs here but the building of the artificial harbour in the 1880s created a beach. Bathing machines (portable changing sheds) made their appearance here by 1900. The bay became a seaside resort and the venue for a summer carnival attracting people from Christchurch who came on special trains.
