Weather permitting, you can get an excellent view of Mount Cook at the other end of Lake Pukaki from here. It might seem closer but it is 70 kilometres away. The centre has a display with tales of Maori and Pakeha history.
The Visitor Centre is on the Tekapo branch of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
