6X Old Wharf Road, Haruru, Far North
The Haruru Falls are about 4 km west of Paihia in an area that is now a fast-growing suburb of the town. The falls were the original landing site for European traders in the early 1800s. Old Wharf Road, once called Cherry Tree Lane, leads to the main viewing area of the falls, which are at right. The road was the first registered road in New Zealand. A two-hour walk through the mangroves along the Waitangi inlet from Haruru is popular with visitors.
The falls drop in a rare and spectacular horseshoe shape. Maori legend has it that a taniwha, or water monster, lives below the falls. In the 1880’s there were over a hundred Maori villages along the Haruru River.
