Te Awa-te-Take Historic Reserve

This pre-contact Te Atiawa pa is the on the northern bank of the Waitara River. From the end of the road it is an half hour walk (on a paper road). En route you will pass on your right , the Tikorangi Redoubt errected by Taranaki Militia Volunteers in June 1865. (The redoubt site is on private land). The pa site is in bush and a Conservation reserve. Look for the defensive ditches and, throughout the pa, underground food storage pits.
