Grey Lynn RSC
By The Auckland Psychogeographer
There are returned services associations, and then there are returned services clubs. Central Auckland has the only two left, one in Parnell, the other in Grey Lynn, behind the well-to-do West Lynn shops, on Richmond Road. Apparently merchant seamen were not allowed to join RSA’s after the war - and so RSC’s came into being, recognising their vital contribution. Following an apparent difference of opinion regarding poppy selling, the RSA’s and RSC’s are no longer affiliated, an odd breakup after 87 long years of comradeship.
This particular venue is a converted pre-war school hall (that also had a life as a cinema and even film production studio), with mid century refurbishments including a fab upstairs function room that’s retro enough to have a mirror ball. Some lovely pictures are available on the venue’s website, here.
Amenities include a large parking lot, very reasonable bar, and a busy independent kitchen serving none of the deep-fried offerings such places often traffic in. The GLRSC is possibly best known as the place where many regulars of the Gluepot washed up, and consequently live music is a mainstay here, with regular Friday party shows and the odd Sunday afternoon set by various greying rock & roll and country-rock outfits. (The shows are always well-attended and frequently very groovy). Elsewhere there’s a relatively discreet gaming area and a sports betting area, the obligatory big screens, jukeboxes, pool and snooker tables - with pay-as-you-go overhead lighting to keep you on your toes. There’s even a small library (focussing largely on Stephen King thrillers).
With an influx of new local members, as well as regular fundraising events, a car boot sale on the last Sunday of each month, popular quiz nights and concerts upstairs, the GLRSC is a busy community institution unlikely to fade out any time soon. Trendy bars may come and go, but the razza is forever. Membership is just $30 per annum.
