1 Tui Street, Saint Leonards, Saint Leonards, Dunedin City
Named for the Sussex town of St-Leonards-on-the-sea, this pretty harbourside suburb is on the road to Port Chalmers and is where you might find some of Dunedin's finer country residences.
The most elegant is said to be St Leonards Lodge, formerly Aorangi. It certainly takes pride of place on the headland. It is also a symbol of the opportunities of new world, having been built in 1903 for Scots immigrant engineer John Cook, who had worked long and hard as ship's engineer and then worked his way up in the same trade in Dunedin.
The architects were Mason and Wales.
Nowadays it is a Boutique Hotel.
