Bottle Top Bay

The tidal inlet where Drury Creek makes it's way into the Pahurehure Inlent on Manukau Harbour is called Bottle Top Bay. NZPlaces doesn't know why, if you do, please let us know.
It's known locally for excellent fishing, and known internationally amongst the exclusive set involved in powerboat racing, specifically mini speedboats.

When this sport, which began in 1905 in New Zealand, increased in popularity in the late 1950s, the South Islands cool calm lakes and waterways were the obvious playground for the enthusiasts. But Aucklanders wanted to have a go too, and Bottle Top Bay was OK. Here many races were held, and records were challenged. The site dedicated to the history of this sport is called New Zealand Speedboat history, and it hosts footage of the methane fueled events including the 'Kilo Runs'.

In 2018, Bottle Top Bay is famous for hosting the same thing as many other New Zealand beaches. Rubbish. Including bottle tops.
