Mangere-Otahuhu, Auckland

Otahuhu Transport Interchange

A flash new train station with two bus platforms, which suffers only one significant issue, that it is not really in the centre of the suburb. But it is at the end of the road, station road, and has been significantly better patronised since the 2016 upgrades.

Otahuhu Station had actually been here since 1875, when the town was just another far flung rural satellite of Auckland. Things changed with the Great South Road and then the Southern Motorway zooming through Otahuhu, and the demographic changed many times over too, but now it is a solid Pacific Island stronghold, from where many workers make their way to employment throughout the region.

Auckland Transport invested a significant amount in the upgrade of this station in 2016, to include the two bus platforms. Previously the long walk to town had also meant a long walk to any bus service, now they come to the station.

Otahuhu has a bit of rail history behind it, with rail workshops here from 1927 until 1992, and the area was also used as a large loco depot from 1905 to 1968. Just south of the station, between here and Mangere, is the rail fabrication facility, which continues to this day. The 1875 station however, had already burned down in 1909 and the replacement did not qualify for heritage protection so the new 2012 was firmly welcomed and continues to attract increasing patronage.
