Aroha Island Ecological Centre

An outstanding example of New Zealand's commitment and dedication to ecology, especially natural landscapes and the iconic little brown Kiwi. Philanthropist Dr Colin Little bought the 12 hectare Island block in the KeriKeri inlet in 1971 with the purpose of restoring the natural environment. The Island's position in the mangroves of the Kerikeri inlet and causeway link with the mainland meant it has proved ideal for restoring biodiversity and fostering Kiwi. Dr Littles early gains in removing exotic plants and animals were enshrined in perpetuity in 1984 when a QEII open space covenant was registered on the title, QEII trust later purchasing the island. A veritable army of volunteers carry on the good work through the Aroha Island trust, running education programmes and tours including overnight stays in a range of accommodation at the Ecological and Education Centre.
