22 Kuriheka Road, Kuriheka-Maheno, Waitaki

Kurehika Station

The house is hidden behind trees at Kurehika but you can drive past the Oamaru stone stables, war memorial and woolshed of this sheep station which was purchased by Colonel Joseph Cowie Nichols, CBE. in 1885. Over the next few years he constructed a fine homestead and remarkable group of farm buildings, using the local limestone. Colonel Nichols who lived to be 95 was Commanding Officer to the Otago Mounted Rifles and had been educated at Christs College and Cambridge. His fascination with weapons and military artefacts can be seen in the war memorial which records the service of 83 persons of whom 21 were killed. It was erected in 1922. The family financed the stone Anglican St Andrews church at Maheno.
