A source of water power led to the siting of the Victoria Battery near here on the Ohinemuri River. Waikino was the town established as a service centre. Ores to be processed were shipped by rail from Waihi. Today the Wakino station is served by a tourist train.
The hall is original but the fine station building is not, it was shifted here from Paeroa. It has an interesting cafe.
