36 College Street, Te Aro, Wellington City
Wellington's premier food market is a fascinating place to visit even if you don't want to shop. It has been describe as "a farmers market, a boutique produce store, and a giant cheese wheel fridge with a fresh juice stall." Moore Wilson is perfect for picnic provisions, offering many of New Zealand’s finest foods including deli meats, fresh produce and bread. It boasts easily the best cheese counter in town too.
In 1984 Architect Ian Athfield gave Wellingtonians a post-modern structure to remind them of the tectonic risk they live with. (see the image) Subsequently Athfield Architects further developed the shopping centre including in it among other things a homage to the previous Chinese inhabitants of this part of town. Also on display is a sculpture by Paul Dibble celebrating the deep fresh water bore on the site which taps a source 500 feet down believed to come from the Wairarapa. This water source was used for over 50 years by a soft drink manufacturer on the site.
