Salvation Army Fortress

Another of Dunedin's interesting array of Heritage Buildings given over to accommodation. One apartment is available for visitors and somewhat sought after as the building is particularly well located in Dowling Street.

There is no separating the building from it's former purpose, as it is every inch the Salvation Army Fortress that it was intended to be in 1891 and says so loud and clear on the front. The Salvation Army had taken to this style of building, first in Britain then spreading the style around the 'colonies'.

The next closest fortress building is in Perth, where the congregation still call themselves a 'fortress'. A Famous and formidable 1930 Art Deco fortress in New York is on a much larger scale and has recently been overhauled.

General William Booth, who founded the church, came to New Zealand to open this one.
