1749 Matauri Bay Road, Matauri Bay, Far North
At Matauri Bay there is a beautiful sandy and safe swimming beach but little shade and a popular camping ground. Offshore are the Cavalli Islands where the "Rainbow Warrior" - a Greenpeace ship, blown up in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour by French Secret Service personnel - has its last resting place. It is now a marine reserve and a diving attraction. Onshore, the Rainbow Warrior is commemorated by a memorial commissioned by Ngati Kuri and built over two years with local support by sculptor Chris Booth. The Rainbow Warrior's propeller is the centrepiece of the sculpture. To reach it climb the track starting near the camping ground.
