126 Hereford Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch, Christchurch City
Celebrated architect Cecil Wood originally conceived this five storey 1925 heritage building.
Since being earthquake damaged, it has been saved from demolition and is under restoration and redevelopment by development group Box 112. Bolstered by a City Council Heritage Grant, the group has set about stripping back previous facades and internal fittings to reveal windows and original structure of the building, before finishing it in office spaces. The ground floor has an impressive entrance and six metre stud and will be dedicated to retail and maybe some hospitality. Christchurch citizens who have lost much of their heritage seem enthused by the project, not least because this building is in a prime city location on Oxford Terrace. It should be ready for tenants in 2019.
