In 2020, the 145th year since engineering industry moved into the Hillside area of Dunedin, the facilities there were gearing up for a new burst of life as a 'Centre for engineering excellence in the South Island.'
Government was behind the money and the bold plan to reviatalise the railway-based industry centre, which once employed nearly 400 men. The long tale starts before government intrests in the railways, in 1875, when smaller engineering services sprung up in this area...
A set of sister workshops are spread around the country at Woburn, Addington, Otahuhu and Wanganui, and despite the rising and falling and potentially improving fortunes of the rail network, all have survived and contributed to the system.
