New City Hotel and Backpackers Christchurch

A survivor from the 'old city' the New City pub rocked through the earthquakes, was repaired quickly thanks to a grant, and continues to provide budget accommodation, hospitality and live music as it has done at this end of Colombo Street since 1930.

Earlier popular for it's proximity to the (now defunct) railway station on Moorhouse Ave, the venue has changed with the times, but not much. With a generous hint of the Moderne, the New City is now the last old fashioned pub in a city which formerly had many. It was also not the first pub on this site, the first liquor licence here actually was issued in 1864, and the hotel was called the City.
