527 Marine Parade, South New Brighton, Southshore, Christchurch City
Christchurch City Community Halls
Since the 1990s a growing and grooving little corner of cultural and community collaboration has organically grown into a popular park.
The organic growth has been spurred by the input of one Bon Suter, a veteran artist and sculptor. Ms Suter lobbied the Christchurch City Council for a space in which to teach a disabled student, and won this park in her treasured home territory of South Brighton. Sculptors gather here in the sand dunes off Marine Parade, mainly working in stone and leaving their work for the community. In 2015 a scrub fire threatened the area and wiped out Suter’s self planted Native garden, the sculptures survived. Suter and her students can be found here most days, etching out their ideas in stone.
