The jumble of keeled yachts, cutters and vintage launches stored up on the hard outside the Devonport Yacht Club keeps the Devonport foreshore well connected to its maritime past. The Devonport Yacht Club itself has been in existence for over 100 years, a home for yachties keen on coastal cruising and racing. Long before the formation of the yacht club, the Devonport waterfront was the home of some of New Zealand’s most productive shipbuilding yards, building steam ferries, Pacific trading vessels and racing yachts. The names of those boat builders, such as Charles Bailey, Robert Logan and Henry Niccol, may be familiar to some, with a handful of the larger yachts built here still making occasional appearances at races and events such as the annual Labour Weekend Coastal Classic race.
