'Vanished World' site 7. Here you will find volcanic deposits from the extinct volcano of Oamaru. Broken lava covers layers of lava, volcanic ash,sandstone, mud stone and limestone. In the sandstone and limestone are fossil marine shells of subtropical species. Animals and plants living on the side of the volcano were buried alive by successive eruptions. Also look out for pillow lava formed when lava is erupted into water.
