26A Burnell Avenue, Thorndon-Pipitea, Wellington City
A gatehouse with a self-contained apartment, designed by Ernst Plischke, provides provides an entry to a Gray Young designed house that was once the home of diplomats/art collectors Frank and Lyn Corner. Their daughter, tapestry artist and art writer Katy Corner lived in the flat until her death in 2016.
Their fabulous art collection built up over 5 decades was sold in 2018 for $2.6 million but the architecture remains.
Included in the art collection and shown in the photos was the Carrara marble sculpture "White Torso" by Tanya Ashken.
Other works in the collection, which caught changes in the New Zealand art world from the 1940s and focused on Modern Art rather than landscapes, were purchased from then emerging New Zealand artists, now well known, such as John Drawbridge, Toss Woollaston, Rita Angus, Theo Schoon, Gordon Walters, Colin McCahon, Philip Clairmont, Ian Scott and Ralph Hotere. The Corners were able to purchase a Frances Hodgkins painting while they were stationed in the NZ High Commission in London.
