Whangamomona

Whangamomona is a special little township with a smattering of early NZ architecture, a culture of country hospitality and an offbeat sense of humour. The Historic Whangamomona Hotel is undoubtedly the centre of the village, known by some as a magic couples retreat, by others as a good night out and a great country meal. Visitors who travel on the "Forgotten World" railway heritage route spend a night here.
The wacky town also holds an annual "Republic Day" when it celebrates it's independence and elects a President. The January event swells the little town's population by 200 for the duration. As hospitable as it is the hotel can only cater for some and intrepid visitors usually camp on the town's rugby pitch, paying via old fashioned Kiwi Honesty Box.

Don't be fooled by the presence of a general store. Its a facade.
