5 Mara Street, Mangatainoka, Tararua
The landmark Tui Brewery tower has become an icon through its use in advertising. Utilisation of the site for a brewery dates from 1899 but the landmark tower was built in 1931. It was not very useful at first though, because the process of using gravity to turn malt into beer requires supplies to be carried to the top (6th) floor. Architects Gummer and Ford were so carried away with their use of the 'stripped classical' style that they simply left out the stairs and the lift. Seven years later this was put right with an exterior lift.

Tui's other marketing blinder was humorous billboards which popped up in the millenium, entertaining those stuck in traffic jams on Auckland's motorways, amongst other places. The term 'Tui' came to mean an unlikely but amusing scenario.
