Skyline Gondola - Bob's Peak

Taking a gondola ride is a great way to acquaint yourself with Queenstown. But first, listen to our descriptive Audio Guide

The cableway starts in the town and leads up Bob's Peak. (there is also a walking track)

You are rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Wakitipu and the surrounding mountains and if you are inclined you can try the luge, bungy jump parapente, or simply watch.

From Bob’s Peak the view is fabulous. Far below, Queenstown is squeezed into a grid-work of streets following the natural curve of the shoreline. Lake Wakatipu (one of New Zealand’s deepest) shines like a turquoise gemstone, ringed by high mountains and jagged peaks. Walters Peak stands, strong, on the far shore, mountains rise out of the Dart Valley to the north and, closer in, the botanic gardens brighten a point of *land jutting into the lake.*Nature has given its very best to this landscape in the shape of rugged hills and snowy mountains, deep gorges and swift rivers, high lookout points and fertile riverside terraces. In winter Queenstown is a world-class ski town with five major ski areas within an easy drive. In summer it’s a lakeside resort with jet-boating, excellent fly-fishing, canyoning, golf, an old steamboat, and a world class selection of high- *adrenaline adventures to jump in to, quite literally.*To get the best out of Queenstown you’ve got to think ‘high’. Bob’s Peak perches above the town and is reached by an exciting gondola ride that climbs 450 metres in a few short minutes. It’s a stunning view at any time, but on a fine day is made even better by the bright circus colours of parachutes that glide off the high hill above and circle down slowly to *the town below.*Chard Farm and Gibbston Valley Wines, two of Queenstown’s most noted wineries, sit just out of town on a terrace above the Kawerau River. Chardonnay, pinot noir and riesling are favourites from these wineries and, as the years pass, the pinot noir in particular is improving beyond what anyone imagined could come from vines grown at such a high altitude. More high vantage points can be found at the ski areas. In summer the drives up to both Coronet Peak and the Remarkables are easy and save the hard work of having to climb to either on foot. In winter, of course, they’re packed with skiers. So whether you choose to bungy off a high bridge over a swirling river, race down from Bob’s Peak on the luge, jump off the hill wearing a parachute, or glide gracefully down the hillside by gondola, Queenstown is always best seen from high places.
