Taihape Road, Kuripapango-Omahu, Hastings
A 63 hectare reserve managed by the Royal Forest & Bird Society, since it was gifted by a Mr and Mrs Lowry in 1962. It contains 4 walking tracks taking from half an hour up til two and one half hours. "The forest contains many caves, fascinating rock formations and water-cut passages." One of the caves also used to be a family home in the 1800s. The 'Lowry Shelter' is a construct along the track.
Huge pest management efforts in the reserve are reducing the numbers of predators and exotic plants, and bringing birdlife back.
There are three rock climbing areas in the reserve.
Many visitors report high winds in this area, but it is not so bad once you get into the bush.
This is a park which needs a photo or two on NZPlaces, please feel free to send yours in.
