Seddon Statue

A memorial to New Zealand's most dominant Prime Minister.

The Government Buildings/Courthouse behind the statue was built in 1908 to a design by Government Architect, John Campbell. Once called a 'a pile of Victorian brick and stucco' it nevertheless has a proud position behind the statue of Richard John Seddon and is the largest building in Hokitika. It features a massive four and a half metre ceiling height in some areas and five ornate walk-in safes.

The Department of Conservation took over the building after other Government departments no longer needed the space. It was then it was sold into private ownership in 2003 and has been vacant since.
