In March 2015 a new bespoke community library was opened in Devonport, an affluent village-like seaside suburb of the North Shore. Sited at the former library's home in Windsor Reserve, the 950sqm building was designed by, Athfield Architects, and features art installations by North Shore Artist Judy Millar.
It boasts a dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass wall with louvered windows on the north and a curved prow towards the sea, all clad externally in cedar and internally in pine plywood. As well as books, the library includes community meeting space and study rooms. Special architectural features include a porthole window, a nod to the Devonport's Naval Heritage, a security curtain designed by Millar, Barry Brickell tiles from previous library and facilities for the resident pet cat.
The $7.8 million.eco-friendly build was the result of two years of public consultation involving seven public workshops.
As Paul Litterick points out this was the first 'Athfield' building designed after Ian Athfield's death.
The library shares it's home reserve with the Devonport War Memorial.
