236 Princes Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin Central, Dunedin City
Here stands the bizarre monument to founding father, Captain Cargill, incorporating a drinking fountain. Carved in Melbourne from Tasmanian stone, and covered in gargoyles, it appears somewhat ornate for its site now, as older buildings in Custom House Square have been demolished.
According to public opinion, this monument was always too ornate for it's subject, a dour scotsman who, though full of energy, was not given to frivolity.
Otago Sculpture Trust give a brilliant account of the history of this fascinating monument.
