Link Building - Wellington Waterfront

Roger Walker, working for Calder, Fowler, Styles & Turner, applied his distinctive architectural toolbox when he designed this 'toll house' for a roll on/roll off berth in Wellington. (1969) Some say the tiny porthole window in the downstairs toilet here was Walkers first use of the circular windows which became his signature. It was initially called the Linkspan building, now known as the Link or Wharf building but has held several different roles including housing the Wellington Free Ambulance.

An unplanned benefit of the cute little booth is that it was used for many years as a jumping platform for those keen to show off and cool down in the chilly harbour below. This unsafe practice had Council scratching its head until the Millenium when a stylish and safer purpose built jumping platform was installed nearby. Walker is still practicing in Wellington.

Next to the 'toll house' is a stylised version of the Link Span Bridge which would have been in use here.
