572 Brett Road, Rerewhakaaitu, Other
A small and shallow lake popular with locals, as it is a Recreation Reserve. It was formed 11,000 years ago thanks to an eruption of Mount Tarawera. Good to know is that there is no running water here, so bring your own for drinking and washing.
The place to picnic and fish here is Guy Roe Reserve, which also has a boat ramp and casual camping with an honesty box for fees. There is plenty of bird watching to be done here too on a quiet day, you might see dabchicks, scaup and banded dotterels.
The DOC Campsite, further around the lake is named Ash Pit and Brett Road Campsite, there is an opportunity here for keen campers to work for DOC in exchange for free camping. It is basic though, no electricity provided.
