Michael Fay's Folly

In 1987 Michael Fay made an unconventional challenge for the America's Cup, adding another chapter to the Cup's eventful history. He sought to sail in boats restricted only by the original deed of gift. i.e single-masted and with a waterline length of no more than 90 feet, (27.4 metres). At that time the challenges were being contested in 12 metre Yachts. The New York Supreme court overruled the protestations of the San Diego Yacht club and said the challenge was valid. KZ 1, the yacht on display here, was designed by Bruce Farr and was skippered by David Barnes along with a crew of 40. It was considered to be the fastest monohull at that time for its size. However the San Diego defenders outsmarted Michael Fay by building a multi-hull with a wing mast with which they triumphed when the races were sailed. Subsequently it has been decided that America's Cup challenges should be contested in wing-sailed catamarans.
